“I am the mother of a schoolgirl and I, like no one else, needed such training.”

For many girls in Dzher-Uy, menstruation had been a subject rarely discussed at home. A lack of open conversation often left them unprepared, with little understanding of what to expect. Instead, they relied on friends or older peers for guidance, which sometimes led to confusion or misinformation.
To address this, Good Neighbours UK launched a project in the Kyrgyz Republic aimed at breaking the silence around menstrual health. The initiative encouraged mothers to share their knowledge with their daughters, ensuring they received the information and support they needed at home. It also provided direct education for young girls, helping them understand the changes they would experience and how to manage them with confidence.
A key focus of the training was menstrual hygiene—teaching girls how to use sanitary pads, care for their underwear, and maintain cleanliness. This knowledge was essential not only for their health but also for their self-esteem. When girls felt prepared and supported, they could go about their daily lives without unnecessary anxiety or embarrassment.
“I liked how they taught us how to support our daughters during such a period.”
The impact of this work quickly became clear. One mother shared how her daughter had returned from school eager to talk about what she had learned in the workshops. It was the first time they had a real conversation about menstruation—an opportunity to connect, share experiences, and break down barriers of silence and discomfort.
As the project came to an end, many mothers expressed their gratitude, recognising the difference it had made not only for their daughters but for themselves. By equipping both generations with the knowledge and confidence to speak openly, this initiative fostered a healthier, more informed community—one where no girl had to navigate puberty alone.
Good Neighbours UK’s work in Dzher-Uy was a testament to the power of education and open dialogue. By empowering mothers and daughters to talk about menstrual health, it created lasting change—ensuring that future generations would grow up with the understanding and support they deserved.
