The Parbat District is a remote, mountainous region in central Nepal. Due to lack of basic infrastructure and relative weakness of the economy, communities here often lack access to good quality care. We completed a project in December 2023 to improve access and understanding of hygiene services and practices.
In response, GN Nepal conducted a needs assessment of the 8 posts in November 2021, which allowed us to see that there needed to be structural, equipment and training improvements to ensure quality care in public health. In response to this, we constructed and renovated a Drinking Water System and installed water filter support, which improved water quality. We introduced better sanitation management, such as through toilet renovation and distribution of sanitation kits.
We also trained staff in WASH-FIT tools and practices. 18 workers attended training on infection prevention, which resulted in better understanding of how to clean medical equipment for future procedures. Good Neighbours UK also promotes community involvement, so WASH education sessions were opened to community members to improve knowledge on handwashing, food hygiene and menstrual hygiene.
Ultimately, access to services and hygiene practices were improved in health facilities, and WASH practices in communities were developed. This project is expected to have a lasting impact on the quality of health in this district. All 8 facilities targeted now have continuous supply of water and functional toilet facilities, as well as hand washing stations. Through the work of Good Neighbours UK and the involvement of organisations and the community in the area, a long term improvement has been made to the population in this area, which has a multidimensional positive impact on education and local productivity.
