We are pleased to inform that Good Neighbours UK have been selected for further funding from the Guernsey Overseas Aid and Development Commission (GOAC).
Along with our partner in the field, Good Neighbours Niger (GN Niger), we are excited to begin work on this vital 12-month expansion, focused on strengthening IHC services in Hamdallaye, Niger.
This project will build upon our successful phase I project which ran from August 2024 – July 2025. In Phase I, we expanded the maternity ward of Hamdallaye Primary Health Centre, relieving overcrowding by providing additional delivery and observation beds and specialised medical equipment to support pregnant women and newborns. We also trained 4 midwifes and 4 nurses in prenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care. Along with 20 volunteer mothers who raised awareness on antenatal care and malaria prevention.

As a result, the health centre has seen a 33.7% rise in annual users, growing from 4,000 to 5,349 women and children accessing care. More women are visiting for antenatal check-ups too, with first visits up by 9.3% and fourth visits up by 39%, while deliveries at the centre are already rising from 112 to 129. Encouragingly, district health data shows maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in the area dropped from 1.36% before the project to 0% at its end.

Our trained volunteer mothers are more confident to provide effective care, prevent disease spreading, and to change attitudes toward giving birth at the IHC from within their communities. It’s this kind of lasting, community-owned change that we’re excited to build on in Phase II.
As malaria is one of the leading causes of pregnancy related health complications and childhood death, we also ran a health campaign at the start of the rainy season which screened 1000 children under the age of 5 for malaria and treated 417 children who were already diagnosed, further strengthening local autonomy.

In Phase II we will further improve maternal, newborn and child health in Kollo District by upgrading the solar power and sanitation facilities at Hamdallaye and Gounou Bangou Primary Health Centres and empowering mothers within the community by giving them access to improved healthcare . We will restore solar power systems, repair a leaking water tank, construct four accessible toilets and provide additional equipment such as an ultrasound machine, warming tables, and a centrifuge. We will also train 2 midwives, 9 nurses and 23 volunteer mothers and refresh on knowledge already taught during Phase -I. This will increase community mobilisation and agency. These actions combined will improve the local communities access to advanced maternal and child health care, preventing critical cases from having to travel over 20 miles on poor roads into Niamey to receive the care they need.

This will give children the best start in life and allow mothers to cherish her first moments with her child in a safe and sanitary environment.
